About the Historic Ship Inn
In 1794 when the Lancaster Turnpike (Route 30) was built, it was the first highway in the United States and one of the marvels of the century. Almost the sole avenue of transport between Philadelphia and the west, it was soon occupied with stagecoaches, wagons and drivers. To meet the needs of these travelers, public houses sprang up every few miles and among the earliest of these was the Ship Inn, where VK Brewing Co. & Eatery resides!
The Ship Inn was a frequent stop for people traveling via stagecoach from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. Stagecoach passengers paid 31 1/4 cents per meal at the inn while the coaches and horse would rest in the side yard.
The original mile marker post is inside the building. “25 M to P” showed travelers that they had 25 miles until they reached Philadelphia.
